For Youths: Know Your Rights

What to do if you are stopped by police.

When you are stopped by the police you have to give your name, age and address. You do not have to answer any questions or write anything down.

This is what you should say if you are stopped:

I want a lawyer now. I do not want to talk. I do not want to give up any of my constitutional rights. Talk to my lawyer if you want to ask me questions, search me or my belongings, or put me in a police line-up.

You should not talk about your case with anyone but your lawyer.
