Nelson moved to New Orleans in 2002 and calls the city home. He graduated from Loyola University College of Law in New Orleans in May of 2008, earning certificates in International Law and Environmental Law. He started as a staff attorney at JRS in October of 2008. He is currently licensed to practice law in Louisiana.
Nelson grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and Huntsville, Alabama. He attended Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he received a B.S. in Psychology. After college, he spent time in Costa Rica working as an interpreter for a local hotel in Monteverde, a small Quaker community in the rain forest. He also spent time in New York City as an art handler for the Charles Cowles Gallery in Chelsea.
While at Loyola, Nelson worked as a Student Clinic Volunteer with the Katrina Clinic. He assisted people who were having difficulties with FEMA, insurance claims, and contractor fraud. The beginning to his legal training will always be linked with Hurricane Katrina. The storm hit the city the week after his first semester started, forcing the class to move to Houston where the University of Houston Law Center graciously took them in. He spent the summer after his first year in Budapest, Hungary, and Vienna, Austria, where he studied International and Comparative Law with the Loyola abroad programs.
